Winter is Coming: How to Protect Your Water System from Freezing Temperatures

As the chill of winter approaches, it's crucial to ensure that your adventure vehicle or off-grid home's water system is prepared to withstand freezing temperatures.

Tyler from Guzzle H2O offers a timely reminder and practical advice on how to winterize your stealth water purifier, ensuring your system remains functional throughout the cold months.

Two Methods to Winterize Your Water System

There are two effective methods to protect your water system: using RV antifreeze solution or compressed air. Both methods require some initial preparation, starting with the removal of the carbon block filter.

1. Remove the Carbon Block Filter :

Begin by unscrewing the filter housing, taking out the carbon block filter, discarding it, and then reinstalling the clear housing. This step is essential for both winterizing methods.

2. Using RV Antifreeze Solution :

  • This method is often considered the easiest and most reliable.
  • Purchase food-safe antifreeze solution from your local hardware store.
  • Follow your RV manufacturer's instructions for filling your onboard system with the antifreeze.
  • Ensure the faucet where your stealth unit is installed is open, and watch for the antifreeze solution to flow out of the faucet. This indicates that the system is adequately protected.

3. Using Compressed Air :

  • This method involves pumping out your RV water system using compressed air.
  • Follow your manufacturer's directions for injecting air into the onboard water system to push the water out of the plumbing.
  • After blowing out the entire system, it's crucial to blow out the stealth unit itself to ensure no water remains in the UV unit.
  • To do this, remove the carbon filter housing, open the faucet, set your compressor to 30 PSI, and inject air directly into the center of the filter base. Continue pumping air until the faucet runs dry.

Additional Resources and Tips

For more detailed instructions on either method, refer to the manual that came with your GUZZLE H2O Stealth system, which is also available on the Guzzle H2O website. By following these steps, you can ensure that your water system is well-prepared to survive freezing conditions this winter.Taking the time to winterize your water system not only protects your investment but also ensures that you have access to clean water throughout the colder months. Whether you choose the antifreeze solution or compressed air method, proper preparation is key to a worry-free winter.
